While in NZ, you should check out...

North Island - the Bay of Islands, Coromandel (especially Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove), Waitomo Caves, Whakarewarewa Thermal Village in Rotorua, The Buried Village at Lake Tarawera, Tongariro National Park, and Mt Ruapehu.

South Island - Abel Tasman National Park, Kaikoura Whale Watching, Tranz Alpine Express train journey from Christchurch to Greymouth, Hamner Springs, Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, Queenstown and Glenorchy (alot of Lord of the Rings was filmed here),Milford Sound, Arrowtown and up over the Crown Range to Wanaka.

Even if you're short on time, try and make it to the South Island because it is so much more scenic than the North Island IMO.
